If IE is not opening pages, check your browser settings and make sure that you have a homepage. Go to Tools, Internet Options with Internet Explorer open. Change it to a valid address and bingo. If this is not the case, then trying pinging the DNS and another web site. You may have to hard code the DNS in the DUN settings.
This isn't KAK but works on the same principle:
Cust calls in to say that he's got this porno site (www.peepfree.com)
coming up on his Favorites list frequently, despite him deleting it a few times.
I had him delete it again and reboot, and indeed it came back. I went to
the site myself and the first thing that happened was a window came up telling
me an ActiveX script was attempting to run. Hmmm... Had him run
MSCONFIG, and we noticed there was an item called "runme.hta" on the
list -- doing a Find:Files/Folders it turns out he had "runme.hta" in
c:\Windows\System and a shortcut to it in the Start menu's StartUp group.
So I had him delete both files, plus the bookmarks the HTA (Hypertext
Application) file created, restart the computer, and it didn't come back.
He was using IE 5.0, which doesn't have the script protection (Eyedog) that
later versions had built in, so sent him to Microsoft to get the patch:
http://www,microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuild/scriptlet/en/scriptlet.htm
I shoulda had him mail me the HTA to see if it does more than just add itself to
the StartUp session and drop bookmarks but did not think of it at the time.
Modemui is the windows modem properties dll, renaming this may do damage to
the system drivers.
Name: modemui.dll
Description: Windows Modem Properties
Version: 4.10.0.431
DLLSelfRegister: No
Schannel.dll is for Secure Socket Layers, browsers do not always come with this
feature installed so it may be missing, as long as they are not using a secure socket
layer it should not matter.
Name: schannel.dll
Description: TLS / SSL Security Provider
Version: 4.89.1962.2133
DLLSelfRegister: Yes
To reliably fix this problem either reinstall the 128bit encryption update or go
to add remove programs and follow the IE repair.
Question:
How can I share or combine all my address books, bookmarks, and email with all
my profiles? I would like them all to contain the same information.
Answer:
Yes.
First combine address books. For example, suppose you want to copy profile A's address book to profiles B's address book: Start Communicator as user A.
>From the Communicator menu, select Address Book. In the address book, go to the File menu and choose Export. Export the file as an "ldif" file. (It's a good idea to export the ldif file to profile B's profile folder in order to make the next step easier.) Close Communicator. Open Communicator and choose to run as profile B.
>From the Communicator menu, select Address Book. In the address book, go to the File menu and choose Import. Import user A's ldif file which you previously had exported. Should another user profile address book be shared, continue to export the combined address books of A and B to C by repeating the procedure above.
Do the same for the Bookmarks.
Your email messages will not be as easy to import. Any messages that are in the standard folders can not be imported, since importing the folder will simply overwrite the new folders. However, you can copy over folders that you have created. Open Windows Explorer and click on the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users directory. In each profile directory you will find a directory called Mail. In the Mail directory there will be a file with the name of the folder you have created, and then a second file with the same name and a .SNM extension. Copy both of these files to your new profile Mail directory. When you start the new profile, the new folders should be in the list. Note: Combining address books is not the same as sharing information between two different address books. For information on that topic, please see http://help.netscape.com/kb/client/971014-21.html
If you're using Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01 and get an invalid page fault in Webcheck.dll, this is almost always due to the fact that your Webcheck.dll is left over from your previous version of Internet Explorer. You can download the right version for IE5 here, but first go to C:\Windows\System\Webcheck.dll, right-click the file, click Properties and the Version tab. The download will only make sense if your version number is lower than 5.00.2614.3500
Installing the new file will be difficult in Windows, because the old Webcheck.dll will probably be in use, so you won't be able to overwrite it. Here's how to do it:
Restart your computer in DOS mode.
For safety, rename the old Webcheck.dll. Type the following command and press Enter:
ren c:\windows\system\webcheck.dll webcheck.old
If you unzipped and saved Webcheck.dll to C:\unzipped\webcheck, for instance, you should type the following command:
copy c:\unzipped\webcheck\webcheck.dll c:\windows\system /Y
After pressing Enter, you're ready and you can restart Windows (just type WIN at the prompt and press Enter).
IF you are having problems getting email and/or browsing and you have McAfee Personal Firewall do this: just right clicking the system tray icon for the McAfee Personal Firewall and selecting "allow all". And then contact McAfee about getting it properly set up with your ISP.
